Girl Got Suspended Because of Dress?
Wednesday, May 5, 2010 During some time in April, a student Erica DeRamus from Oxford High School Alabama, was suspended for 3 days from school as she was dressed "against" the "dress code" of OHS during her senior prom night. She was wearing a cocktail green dress to her prom night when she was spotted by the school athorities who refused to let her take part in the school event. Disappointed by the whole event, she has chosen to be suspended from school for 3 days.  "This isn't the 1940's and this was our High School Prom. We're not that young to be paddled like this, we're among the seniors." Erica stated when she was interviewed by the media. However, she wasn't the only one caught with "inappropriate" attires at the prom. 25 other students of both genders also found themselves in similiar situations. The Oxford High School athorities at Alabama reportedly punished the noted students since they did not abide to the school's dress code. They were given a choice of a 3-day suspension or a corporal punishment. According to the dress code, students are clearly not allowed to wear transperent, neck-lines revealing, back-lines revealing, or shorter dresses that doesn't cover the knees properly or dresses that exposed the mid-riffs. Erica DeRamus was totally upset about not being able to have fun at her senior prom night as she was said to be not appropriately dressed for the occassion and hence instead was given a 3 day suspension from school. Trey Holladay, the Principal of Oxford High School said, "Girls and guys must act accordingly while being at a high school. There're certain expectations from our community and being a parent, all i wish from my students, is assurance that they fullfill those expectations." adapted from http://news.about-knowledge.com/prom-dress-that-got-girl-suspended/ Is the school being too strict to the students for not letting them dressed up according to themselves and trust that they will not choose clothings that are "inappropriate"? And is it too much of a punishment for not abiding the dress code of the school during a prom night celebration to get a 3-day suspension? Or are teenagers these days are dressing "the lesser, the better, the sexier"? Do standard controls like these be encouraged more so that teenagers will not get out of hands regarding their dressing? |
